Interesting Articles I Enjoyed This Week
|I’m going to start saving all the articles I come across and like in the coin/currency world to start sharing them all with y’ all. There’s some fascinating stuff out there!
Here are the ones I enjoyed from this week:
Is This The Very First U.S. Coin? @ NPR — “In 2013, David McCarthy spotted a rare coin in an auction catalog and immediately had a hunch it was the first coin minted by the fledgling United States of America in 1783. Not the first run of coins, mind you, but the very first one.”
Rare National Banknotes Highlight the Stack’s Bowers ANA Currency Auction @ GreySheet.com — “A small size note was also the highest grossing single lot of the auction; a lovely Fr.2220-F 1928 $5000 FRN from Atlanta graded PCGS Very Fine 30 PPQ realized $129,250 (lot #10401).” (This is the note pictured above – what a beauty!!!!)
Why isn’t the World’s Fair of Money being live streamed? @ Coin Collectors Blog — “Since the American Numismatic Association Technology Committee was formed and I was asked to be a member, I have been calling for some way to bring parts of the show to the public that cannot attend. It is not like there is a big technological barrier anymore!”
What kind of hobby is this? @ Coin Update News — “Sometimes I compare our hobby with used-car dealers. When a friend or acquaintance of yours buys a lemon vehicle, do we feel righteous, as if she or he deserved the scam because the car wasn’t thoroughly checked via Carfax, Consumer Reports, or a trusted mechanic before purchase? Why do so many coin collectors (not you, naturally) feel our fellow hobbyists deserved what they got?”
Gold coin worth $4.3 mln stolen and melted-down by Lebanese mafia @ Alarabiya.net — “The gold coin was the size of a car wheel, weighing a 100-kilogram and worth around $ 4 million US dollars. The heist, was labeled one of the spectacular heists in Germany’s history…”
